Extreme Weather Blog

Tornados:
Tornados are just swirling clouds. But they can swirl around fast like a car. Sometimes torados are called twisters. Twisters can move fast like a car like the story of the Wizard of Oz. Some of these tornados end up in a place called Tornado Alley. Tornado Alley is in the United States. A state called Florida has lots of tornados. They end in October.

Hurricanes:
Hurricanes are the biggest storms. They can be even seen from space. The center of a hurricane is called the eye. Some people call it the eye of the storm. Hurricanes are located over water. (WATERSPOUTS) Water spouts are not tornados. They are shoots that swirl up on water. They suck up fish and frogs from the water and it takes them inside the spout and when it's over it might leave fish on the ground and frogs on the roof of a house!

Thunderstorms and Lightning:
Thunderstorms shoot lightning during a storm in the summer. Lightning is the sound of explosions. It makes a loud sound called thunder. That's why they are called thunderstorms.

Earthquakes
Earthquakes are vibrations that a volcano makes when it errupts. And the plates could turn on the earth. It's called shifting plates. When one plate moves against another, they rub. Like when you wash hands. Earthquakes can make cars crash, trucks tip over and buildings tip over. Or they could fall apart.

Volcanos:
A volcano is a mountain with a giant hole inside that squirts lava out of the top. The magma chamber is located in the heart of a volcano. It's where the lava is stored.

Snowstorms:
Snowstorms are cold storms that blow snow everywhere. They are also called blizzards. When a blizzard blows so much snow on your doorstep, you are then snowbound. It's when you can't get out of your house.

If you are caught in a storm, here are some safety tips:
1. Don't go to water
2. Don't go into an open field
3. Don't hide under a tree
4. The safest place to be is indoors.
5. You should stay calm and don't panic.
6. Get games and your stuffed animals.
7. You will need a flashlight and batteries or candles and a lighter.
8. Get a radio that runs on batteries and you can listen to what the weather is like.

Clouds:
There are several types of clouds in the United States.
One is the Stratus. It's a big blanket in the sky that makes rain fall.
Another one is cumulus. It means good weather. They are white puffy clouds.
Another one is cirrus. They are the high whistly clouds. They mean bad weather is coming.
Another one is Nimbus. They make rain fall too like stratus clouds.

My favorite type of weather is SUNNY! I am scared of thunderstorms because they have big booms and lightning flashes. I feel safe in my house with my mommy & daddy. Sometimes we go to the basement when there is a tornado. Or you could go to a place called a storm cellar.

That's all folks.
